一般描述
Mannitol Salt Agar is a modified version of the selective agar proposed by Chapman (1945) for the isolation and presumptive identification of Staphylococcus aureus. The medium contains beef extract, pancreatic digest of casein, and animal tissue to provide carbon, nitrogen compounds, long-chain amino acids, vitamins, trace nutrients, and other essential growth factors. Many other microorganisms except Staphylococcus aureus are inhibited by the high salt content of 7.5 %. Mannitol on fermentation leads to acid production that can be detected by the phenol red indicator. S. aureus ferments mannitol to produce yellow-colored colonies surrounded by yellow zones.
