Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 7q36. The encoded protein is a proline-directed serine threonine kinase and is a member of cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) family. Cdk5 is highly expressed in the nervous system.

生化/生理作用

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) plays a vital role in normal development of the mammalian central nervous system. It is also implicated in regulation of migration and neuronal plasticity. Cdk5, expressed in neurons, modulates cytoskeletal elements, axonal guidance, membrane transport, synaptogenesis and cell survival during both normal and pathological conditions. Downregulated expression of the gene is associated with various types of disease such as Alzheimer′s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson′s disease, Huntington′s disease and acute neuronal injury.
