Adenylate kinase 2, is the isozyme of adenylate kinase encoded by AK 2 gene and is highly expressed in heart, liver and kidney. Adenylate kinase regulates the adenine nucleotide composition within a cell by impelling the reversible transfer of the γ-phosphate group from ATP to AMP, releasing two molecules of ADP.AK2 is localized in the mitochondrial intermembrane space and may facilitate during apoptosis. It also plays a pivotal role in cellular energy homeostasis and in adenine nucleotide metabolism. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in hematopoiesis.
