BarH like homeobox 2 (BARHL2) belongs to BARH gene family and is expressed in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), amacrine cells (ACs), and horizontal cells. In human chromosome, the gene BARHL2 is located on 1p22.2.

BARHL2 and BARHL1 are two homeobox genes in mouse and human, which are highly related to the Bar Drosophila genes. BARHL2 plays a key role in retinal development, including regulation of amacrine cells and retinal neuron subtype specification, differentiation and survival of retinal ganglion cells. Loss of BARHL2 leads to the development of cholinergic amacrine cells and devoid of glycinergic and GABAergic amacrine cells. Methylation of BARHL2 serves as a marker for predicting early and advanced stage of gastric cancer.
