The open reading frame C12orf42 is a hypotheical protein of unknown function and is located 22.7kb upstream of 2 SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) associated with restenosis. This gene was seen to be upregulated upon treatment with TGF-β superfamily of growth factors called bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) on global gene transcription in breast cancer cell lines. Chromosome 12 makes up about 4.5% of the human genome. It encodes over 1,100 genes within 132 million bases. A number of deformities such as osteoarthritis, kniest dysplasia, hypochondrogenesis and achondrogenesis are linked to chromosome 12. A gene for Noonan syndrome, which includes heart and facial developmental defects is located on chromosome 12.
