白细胞介素-1 (IL-1)，最初被称为淋巴细胞活化因子 (LAF)，可激活T细胞淋巴细胞，进而增殖并分泌白细胞介素-2 (IL-2)。 IL-1主要从受刺激的巨噬细胞和单核细胞中释放，但也已显示可从几种其他类型细胞中释放，并且被认为在炎症和免疫应答中起关键作用。IL-1的其他同义词包括：内源性热原(EP)、促有丝分裂蛋白(MP)、辅助峰-1 (HP-1)、T细胞替代因子III(TRF III或TRFM)、B细胞活化因子(BAF)和B细胞分化因子(BDF)。两种密切相关的药物白细胞介素-1α (IL-1α)和白细胞介素-1β (IL-1β)在氨基酸序列中具有62％的同源性，并可引起几乎相同的生物反应。IL-1α 和IL-1β 的大小均为约17kDa，在糖基化量方面具有一些异质性。
