一般描述
StAR (steroidogenic acute regulatory protein) related lipid transfer domain containing 4 (STARD4) belongs to the StAR family of proteins containing StAR related lipid transfer (START) domain. StARD4 is ubiquitously expressed with higher level of expression in liver and kidney. In human chromosome, the gene STARD4 is localized on 5q22.
生化/生理作用
StAR related lipid transfer domain containing 4 (STARD4) is regulated by sterol regulatory element binding protein-2 (SREBP-2). StARD4 is involved in regulating cholesterol metabolism, and maintaining cholesterol homeostasis. StARD4 converts cholesterol to cholesteryl esters. StARD4 is involved in the bile acid synthesis. StARD4 is capable of transporting cholesterol across the membrane. It transports cholesterol directionally to endoplasmic reticulum and endocytic recycling compartment. Mutations in StARD4 leads to decreased sterol transfer.
